SAVE THE OCEAN, SAVE THE WORLD TO SAVE THE MANKIND
Since 2002, the United Nations has recognized World Ocean's Day, which is observed every year on June 8th. It's the ideal time to learn more about the oceans and their significance in our lives, as well as to reconsider what we can do to protect and maintain them healthy and clean.
Three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans. The livelihoods of almost three billion people are dependent on marine and coastal biodiversity.
What does the ocean provide for humans and the planet Earth?
- Water, the powerhouse of the water cycle.
- The oxygen we breathe is produced by the ocean, which absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere.
- The Ocean regulates our climate and weather patterns by transporting heat from the equator to the poles.
- 80% of global trade occurred through marine transportation
- The ocean offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, boating, whale watching, etc.
- Seafood is abundant in the ocean.
- The ocean provides several medicinal products, including components that aid in the treatment of cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease.
For a healthy planet, we need healthy oceans.
What can we do to save our oceans?
- Ban the straw: Use the hashtag #banthestraw to raise awareness about the issue and potential alternatives to straw.
- Beach Cleanups: The plastic that ends up on our beaches & in our oceans is due to human activities.
- Microbeads: Microbeads are tiny plastic particles that can be found in a variety of health and beauty products. Avoid using polyethylene and polypropylene-containing products; we need to reduce the number of microbeads entering the ocean.
- Ocean Safe Sunscreen: Reduce the quantity of UV-blocking compounds that harm coral reefs by switching to sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide.
- Choose seafood that is both safe and sustainable: Stop buying seafood that hasn't been caught or farmed in an environmentally friendly manner. Seafood Watch (https://www.seafoodwatch.org/)
- Contribute to organizations that work to protect the ocean.
- Climate Change: It raises the temperature of the oceans, causing acidification and making it more difficult to breathe in them by lowering dissolved oxygen levels.
- Practice safe boating
- Plastic Pollution: The ocean is littered with plastic, including the bellies of seabirds and sea turtles. As a result of pollution, more and more areas of the ocean are becoming toxic.
Many people don't know that their actions make a difference. So Let's change that: START NOW by sharing this to spread awareness.
"No Water, no Life. No Blue, no Green"
