Major Dhyan Chand, the Hockey Wizard - the pride of India and an eternal hero of Jhansi

The first name that often comes to us when we hear about Jhansi's smart city is VEERANGANA RANI LAXMI BAI. Indeed, a magnificent warrior who embodies the epitome of courage and bravery. She put in far too much effort to fight the British for India's independence.


One of a renowned 1956 Padma Bhushan receiver is also from Jhansi. Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey wizard, settled in Jhansi after six years of schooling in Allahabad, following his father's several army deployments. He practised hockey at Hero's Ground, Sipri Bazar Jhansi.

Hero's Ground, which was previously rocky and uneven, has been redeveloped by CM Yogi as a tribute to Major Dhyan. It now has a synthetic track, boundary walls, grass, lights, and three gates for player entry, and more to visit.

Every year on August 29th, National Sports Day is observed in honor of Major Dhyan Chand's birthday. Last year, on August 29, CM Yogi inaugurated the world's largest and first hockey museum in Asia, located at Rani Laxmi Bai Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, to display his Olympic medals, personal items, and other attractions.

Even he has a statue of himself holding a hockey stick on a hill near the Dhyan Chand stadium, near the Jhansi Fort. The stadium hosts hockey matches on a regular basis. This massive statue is a historical landmark and a tourist spot that offers a stunning sunset view of the city.
