Celebrating these winged wonders! Let's protect their skies. Happy National Bird Day!
On January 5th, India celebrates National Bird Day, a day for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts to learn about birds, their importance, and how to protect them from threats like habitat loss (cutting down forests, urbanization), climate change, pollution, and the illegal pet trade. It was established by the Avian Welfare Coalition, a US based group which aims to raise awareness about the importance of birds in our ecosystems and the need for their conservation. Birds play crucial roles in nature, such as pollinating plants, spreading seeds, and controlling pests. Furthermore, many Indian bird enthusiasts honour Dr. Salim Ali, a renowned ornithologist and bird expert who brought birds into the core of Indian science and nature, giving him the title of "Birdman of India." He dedicated his life to understanding birds, conducting extensive bird surveys, writing multiple books on birds (particularly 'The Book of Indian Birds'), fighting for the preservation of bird habitats, helping to establish renowned sanctuaries such as Bharatpur Keoladeo National Park, and turning his bird-watching hobby into a profound passion.
Delhi NCR also has several attractions that inspire people by providing a direct, peaceful connection to nature, stress reduction, and fostering a sense of wonder and interest about the living world, making visits educational for all ages, particularly during peak winter migration (October-March).
There are numerous locations in Delhi NCR where we can capture and see a variety of birds, including Okhla Bird Sanctuary (Noida), Sultanpur National Park (Gurugram), Hauz Khas Deer Park (Delhi), Sanjay Van (Delhi), Yamuna Biodiversity Park (Delhi), Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary (Delhi), Surajpur Wetlands (Greater Noida), and others. If you are a bird lover or a seeker, please visit any of these locations and share your experiences.
I will conclude my article with a quote:
"Sky Above, Earth Below, Wings Within"
The essence of National Bird Day is encapsulated in the above beautiful phrase, that connects the nature's freedom (sky/earth) to inner potential (wings within), signifying overcoming obstacles with bravery, hope, and serenity. It connects us to birds as symbols of freedom, potential, and natural wisdom by balancing our highest aspirations (sky) and grounded reality (earth) with inner strength and spirit (wings).
